MPMA 6609 - Marine Fisheries Policy


Prerequisite: MPMA 6606 .  This course examines the scientific, social, economic, and legal issues involved in the development of marine fisheries policies and management strategies. Topics covered include common fishing methods and fisheries vocabulary, a historical perspective of the development of fisheries policy and management including major legislation governing U.S. fisheries, and major challenges in fisheries management as well as strategies to address these challenges including co-management and ecosystem-based management strategies. Students will also become familiar with important socioeconomic and cultural aspects of fishing and the role they play in the policy and management process. Focus will be given to U.S. based commercial fisheries, however, issues concerning global fisheries as well as the recreational and subsistence sectors will also be explored. 3 credits.
