This minor combines courses in basic, intermediate, advanced, and intensive language, literature and the media, and area studies. If students begin at a level beyond CHIN 1102, they can take additional courses from the area studies category to meet the 18-credit hour requirement. At least one of the area study courses must be a 4000-level Chinese (CHIN) course where students will perform selected written and oral activities in Chinese.
Note: Listed below is the sequence of courses for students with no previous knowledge of Chinese. Student who studied more than one year of Chinese prior to matriculation at the University of New Haven will need to take the placement test in order to determine their level of proficiency. If students place higher than CHIN 1102, they will substitute the classes they outplaced with additional area study courses in order to meet the 18-hour requirement.
Note: Special Topics in Chinese or about Chinese culture may satisfy the elective requirements upon approval of the Modern Language Coordinator. CHIN content courses are only for Chinese minors and they will carry one extra credit and a language laboratory. Non-minors must register under GLBS and will not have to fulfill the laboratory requirement.
