Coordinator: Sam Daniels, Associate Professor, PhD, Boston University

A minimum of 30 credits must be completed to earn the master of science degree in mechanical engineering.  Specialized areas include: acoustics/aerodynamics, fluids/biomechanics, heat transfer/thermodynamics, applied mechanics, systems analysis/machine design/random vibrations/numerical analysis, solid mechanics/computer-aided design.

Candidates for admission to the master’s program are normally expected to have a grade average of “B” or better in their undergraduate coursework and to hold a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from a program accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, http://abet.org/), or demonstrated equivalent.  In some cases, applicants with a bachelor's degree in a field closely related to mechanical engineering or who have graduated from a non-ABET accredited undergraduate degree program may be considered for admission on a provisional basis.

Students accepted on a provisional basis may be required to complete certain additional undergraduate mechanical engineering courses and/or graduate courses ME 622  and ME 631  Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Two letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with the applicant’s potential for graduate study are also required.

If a thesis is not chosen, the student must complete a major special project approved by the graduate program coordinator within the scope of other mechanical engineering courses or a three- or six-credit project, on an independent study basis, supervised by a full-time mechanical engineering faculty member.
