A minimum of 30 credits must be completed from courses designated as environmental engineering to earn the master of science degree in environmental engineering. Specialized areas include Industrial and Hazardous Wastes, Water and Wastewater Treatment, and Water Resources. Students must complete a special project on a topic of their interest approved by the graduate program coordinator within the scope of other environmental engineering courses or CE 690—Research Project, supervised by a full-time environmental engineering faculty member. A thesis is optional but highly recommended for students wishing to continue their post-graduate studies or focus on a particular topic under the guidance of a faculty member.
Students may elect to pursue a sequence of courses in one of three areas of concentration, or they may tailor a program of study to meet specific individual needs or objectives within the constraints of the program. At the time of admission to the program, each student is assigned a faculty advisor to assist the student in formulating a program of study and identifying an appropriate research project.
