MPMA 6602 - Marine and Coastal Law


This course provides an introduction to the laws regulating natural resources management and conservation of coastal and marine ecosystems with a focus on U.S. legislation. Aspects of multi-use and conflicts between different sectors of the coastal economy as well as between public and private uses of the coastal zone, levels of governance, and natural resource use are explored. Specific topics covered in the course include maritime law, coastal zone management, public access, fisheries law, protection of endangered species, and ocean renewable energy development. Legislation discussed include, among others, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the Clean Water Act, the Coastal Zone Management Act, Marine Mammal Protection Act, and the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act. 3 credits.
