MARA 3335 - Environmental and Social Justice

Prerequisite: junior standing.  This course explores the foundations of the environmental justice movement by examining historical, current, and emerging issues of inequity of environmental choices, policies, and practices. We will review, analyze, and discuss the implications of environmental injustice on already-disenfranchised communities such as low-income and indigenous peoples. The course will take a multidisciplinary approach when examining theoretical and practical views of both local and global issues. We will also discuss how we as individuals have consciously or unconsciously contributed to environmental justice or injustice through everyday decisions and behaviors and how our society has responded to these conditions and issues. 3 credits.
