SLPA 6600 - Developmental Language Disorders: Ages Birth to Five Prerequisite: PSYC 2216 Child Development or equivalent. This course provides background on the theoretical frameworks and clinical information on the study of language development from birth to five years old. In this course we will explore the fundamental stages and processes of language development. We will study the components of the language system (phonology, semantics, syntax, and pragmatics) and examine the course of development of these components. We will also discuss the biological bases of language and compare theories that attempt to account for speech and language development. Typical and atypical language development will be discussed with special reference to the various communication components: form (structure), content (semantics), and use (pragmatics). Implications for the facilitation of language acquisition in children exhibiting delays or disorders of language development will be reviewed considering cultural implications. Basic principles of assessment and intervention and the transition into the educational setting from early intervention services. 3 credits.
