ENVS 6200 - Advanced Oceanography


Prerequisite: undergraduate oceanography or general chemistry. This course investigates the major aspects of physical, geological, chemical, and biological oceanography and the interrelationships between the disciplines. The course initially focuses on the physical properties of sea water and its circulation. The major water masses of the world's oceans and coastal systems will be described. The chemical composition of the ocean will also be discussed including major and trace elements, dissolved gases, nutrient and micronutrient elements, organic compounds, and the processes controlling this composition. In addition, a survey of marine sediments and sediment dynamics and their role. Past and current impacts on the ocean environment will be considered as well. 3 credits.
