MLSC 6614 - Hematology with Laboratory Prerequisite: MLSC 6601 . This course will cover fundamental concepts in human hematology including the study of the production, function, and physiology of red and white blood cells, bone marrow, evaluation of red cell morphology, and discussion of disease processes that lead to abnormal red cell morphology such as anemias and thalassemias; white blood cell differentiation and disorders and classification of leukemias. There will be an emphasis on identifying normal and abnormal WBC and RBC morphology and indices. Course will include an overview of general hematological methods and automation used in the diagnosis of blood cells disorders, with practice of some basic manual procedures. Correlation of clinical laboratory data with the diagnosis and treatment of erythrocyte and leukocyte disorders will be emphasized. Laboratory fee; 4 credits.
