History, B.A.

Students in the B.A. history program must complete 121 credits. The courses must include the University Core Curriculum and 36 credits of history courses, including those listed below. Students will choose one of the Area Studies (9 credits, 2000-level or higher) from the following: Asia, Europe, Latin America, or the United States.

Students must take at least 3 credits from each of the following areas for a total of 9 credits: Europe, Latin America, and the United States. At least 3 of the 9 credits must cover the pre-modern period and at least 3 cover the modern period.

All students are encouraged to demonstrate an intermediate proficiency (2000-level course) in a foreign language either through a placement test or by passing 2000-level courses.

In line with the University's core mission of experiential education, history majors should participate in at least one experiential learning course or activity (e.g., Study Abroad, Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship, internship, service learning course, etc.) in addition to the senior thesis.

Required Courses


University Core Curriculum


The completion of 40 credits of the University Core Curriculum with the following restrictions:

Tier 1:

  • CC 3.1:MATH 1108  College Math or higher
  • CC 6.1: Historical Perspective: HIST 1000  Thinking Historically About ...
  • CC 8.1: GLBS 1100  Introduction to Global Studies

Tier 2 (12 credits):

  • CC 6.2: History majors may take only 3 credits in the CC 6.2 competency to encourage them to develop breadth in the liberal arts.
  • History majors have the option of choosing any course(s) in any of the other Tier 2 core categories to complete the required 12 credits.

Major Courses


Three credits from each of the following areas, for a total of 9 credits.  At least three credits must be from a course on the pre-modern period and at least three must be from a course on the modern period.

Plus:


  • Plus fifteen free electives (45 credits) - students are encouraged to use the free elective for a foreign language
