Accounting, B.S.

The accounting major is selected by students wishing to pursue a career in management accounting or in public accounting leading to the Certified Public Accounting (CPA) license. The integration of business law, taxation, and finance into the program requirements provides the necessary academic background to meet the challenges of the accounting profession.

Program Outcomes

1.1  Students will demonstrate knowledge of  fundamental business concepts in functional areas. 

1.2  Students will solve business problems  using appropriate quantitative and  analytical techniques. 

1.3  Students will develop and demonstrate  understandings of the use of various  software for use in analysis, e.g. Excel  and other components of Microsoft  Office. 

2.1 Students will demonstrate an ability to  assess the impact of the interaction of  functional areas and external environments on an organization. 

2.2 Students will demonstrate an understanding of how businesses  function in the global marketplace. 

2.3 Students will develop an understanding  of global diversity and how differences  among cultures affect business practices  and decision‐making. 

3.1 Students will demonstrate an  understanding of social responsibility and  its effect on stakeholders. 

3.2  Students will demonstrate the ability to  apply a variety of ethical principles within  the business environment. 

4.1 Students will create well written  documents related to business topics. 

4.2 Students will prepare and deliver an  effective oral presentation on a business  topic.  

4.3 Students will demonstrate effective team  skills

4.4 Students will participate in the  Professional Enrichment Program  according to current directives that  require attendance at sixteen sessions  over the term of the Bachelor's degree.

Students earning a B.S. degree in accounting are required to complete 121 credits, including the university core curriculum (41 credits) and the business program core (30 credits).  Further clarification and additional requirements are outlined below:

Majors that comply with the Pompea College of Business (CoB) core will complete the following courses as part of the 41-credit University Core Curriculum:

Core Competency 3 - Mathematical and Quantitative Literacy

  • Competency 3.1:  MATH 1107  - College Mathematics (or equivalent or higher)
  • Competency 3.2:  BANL 1100 - Introduction to Business Analytics

Core Competency 5 - Critical Thinking and Problem Solving

  • Competency 5.1: BUSA 1000  - Introduction to Business and Entrepreneurship
  • Competency 5.2: ECON 1134 - Introduction to Microeconomics

Core Competency 7 - The Individual and Society

  • Competency 7.2:  ECON 1133 - Introduction to Macroeconomics

 

Majors that comply with the Pompea College of Business (CoB) core are not restricted in the way that the Writing Across the Curriculum requirement is satisfied.

Note(s):


For all accounting majors, ACCT 2250 - Accounting Information Systems  replaces QANL 3343 - Management Information Systems  in the business program core.

Free Electives: 25 credits


  • 25 credits chosen in consultation with the advisor.

These credits can provide advanced material, either in the major or in course work, which reflects emerging issues of importance.  Students should consult with their academic adviser for course selection.
