Requirements for Minors

  • At least 50% of the minor courses must be unduplicated, i.e., not used to simultaneously satisfy credit requirements of the major, core curriculum, or additional minors.
  • At least 50% of the minor courses must be completed in residence at UNH.
  • A minimum GPA of 2.0 is required in the minor (programs may set higher requirements).
  • A student may not declare a major and minor in the same program.

The minor in Civil Engineering provides students with a foundational understanding of the principles and practices in civil engineering, enhancing their ability to apply engineering concepts to the design, analysis, and management of infrastructure projects. This program is designed for students pursuing degrees in other fields who wish to gain expertise in civil engineering while complementing their major studies.

Students enrolled in the minor in Civil Engineering will have an opportunity to be exposed to key areas of the discipline, including fundamental civil engineering system, structural analysis, haydraulics/water resources, environmental engineering, construction engineering and management, and transportation engineering. The curriculum is structured to offer a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, ensuring students are well-prepared to contribute to civil engineering projects or pursue advanced studies in the field.

By completing this minor, students will acquire a solid foundation in civil engineering principles, positioning them for career opportunities or further academic pursuits in engineering-related fields.

Program Outcomes

By the completion of this minor, students will be able to:

  • Identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
  • Apply the fundamental principles of civil engineering to infrastructural systems.
  • Analyze, design, and evaluate the performance of infrastructure systems or system components, considering safety, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness.

Students are required to complete 15 credits of civil engineering courses for the minor. With the approval of the program coordinator, engineering majors may substitute other civil engineering courses for a minor. Students must fulfill all prerequisites for courses chosen. Five courses from the following list are required for the minor, including a set of required courses and a choice of electives.
