CSCI 3316 - Social & Professional Issues in Computing Prerequisites: ENGL 1110 or ENGL 1112 or ENGL 1113 , junior standing. A broad-ranging look at the capabilities and limitations of computers and the effects of rapid change. Roles and responsibilities of the computer professional in our world, codes of ethics. Complex systems, risks, and system failure. Intellectual property. Social effects of networks and global communication, outsourcing, privacy, databases, data mining, cryptography, and snooping. Computer crime, break-ins, terrorism, and countermeasures. Assigned work will include weekly writing, two short papers, and a group research paper with an oral presentation.
