MUSC 2221 - Film Music An introduction to the art, science, and history of musical accompaniment to film. This course will explore the theory and process of how music combines with the moving image and its effect on tone, emotion, and narrative in film. It will incorporate historical and contemporary cinematic examples to demonstrate how music can define a scene's rhythm and style; how it can establish key cinematic themes; and how it can bring unity to shots and scenes. Class work includes weekly viewing and analysis of landmark soundtracks and film scores; creation of both spotting sheets and cue sheets; student development of two analytical essays exploring sound/image relationships in relation to cultural and historical context. 3 credits.
