HIST 3367 - Revolutions: Values and Power, Creation and Destruction


This course examines predominantly political revolutions from the seventeenth century through the present and will explore future prospects for revolution in the twenty-first century. Particular emphasis is given to three revolutions of central importance in the history of Western civilization: the French Revolution, the American Revolution, and the Russian Revolution, though revolutions in Asia and the Middle East in the twentieth century are also examined. Students will explore the various causes of each revolution examined in the course, not only political, but also economic, societal, and cultural. Students will analyze the ideologies that inspired revolutionaries as well as the consequences of revolutions, including how revolutions continue to shape societies today. Students will also be introduced to various skills of data analysis, visualization, and presentation that are transferrable to any profession. 3 credits.
