SLPA 6622 - Neurogenic Language Disorders

The purpose of this course is to prepare future clinicians to assess, diagnose, and treat aphasia and other neurogenic communication disorders in adults. Students will learn assessment and diagnostic procedures as well as intervention and management of the aphasia syndromes. The students will review and understand then historical and theoretical bases of aphasia and identify best practices for assessment and intervention.  Once students understand the historical practices, the course will also help students understand and utilize aphasia treatment literature, which will help them provide evidence-based treatment throughout their future careers. After completing this course, students will understand how to evaluate different types and severities of aphasia and develop goals and plans for intervention based on individual assessment. Different models through which to conceptualize assessment and intervention in aphasia will also be used as frameworks throughout the course. In addition to aphasia, right hemisphere disorders (RHD) and dementia will be discussed. 3 credits.
