THEA 2242 - Studies in Musical Theater History


Studies in musical theatre on stage and screen including its development, conventions, practitioners, and current status. Students will consider the effects of the social, aesthetic, and historical millieux of productions (original and revivals as applicable) on the texts and their reception, as well as the aesthetic, technical, and ethical challenges these texts present for theater artists, audiences, and critics. Engaging with a wide range of primary and secondary texts, students will develop, analyze, and assess historiographic methods and the construction of historical narratives. Course topics vary depending on the focus chosen by the instructor. 3 credits.
