HIST 4040 - From Two Republics to Anti-racism: Race & Ethnicity in Latin America Latin America is a diverse region formed through complex interactions among indigenous, European, African, and Asian peoples. Students will examine how these interactions shaped conceptions of race and ethnicity in the region along with the influence of varying internal and external factors in molding national identities, economic realities, and social and cultural relationships. In addition to analyzing tensions between desires for equality, progress, and freedom in primary and scholarly secondary sources, students will engage with data about demographics and development as they work to describe the construction of race and anti-racism in Latin America as well as their implications for the present. Students will gain valuable knowledge about race and anti-racism in a non-U.S. context along with the analytical skills to compare data and evidence across regional, international, and historical contexts. 3 credits.
