CJST 3360 - Pimps, Pushers, and Perverts: Deterrence, Risk Management, and Social Control Prerequisite: CJST 1100 . Prerequisite or co-requisite: CJST 3340 . What motivates people to hurt others? How can we deter people from harming others? What steps should be taken to manage, control, and help people who cause serious harm to others? Using the lens of autobiographical narratives, we will consider the life course trajectories of perpetrators of human and drug trafficking, drug production and dealing, and sexual offending. We will consider the notion that narratives may inspire, motivate, and help people make meaning from harmful actions. Such internalized life stories may provide respite and sanctuary for the stigmatized, which in turn may bolster pathways to desistance. Possible strategies for facilitating desistance will be considered. 3 credits.
