CHEM 3330 - Physical Chemistry for the Life Sciences

Prerequisites: MATH 1118  or equivalent, CHEM 2202 , BIOL 4461 ; or by permission of the instructor. A one-semester survey of physical chemistry as applied to the biochemical and life sciences. Topics include the application of thermodynamics, chemical equilibria, and quantum mechanics to the study of the structure and function of biochemical systems. Applications include the structure of proteins and nucleic acids, basic statistical mechanics and thermodynamics as applied to biochemical systems, and practical modern spectroscopy for biochemical applications. As this course is intended for students in biochemistry and biological sciences, CHEM 3330 is not equivalent to CHEM 3331 and CHEM 3332, and cannot be taken as a substitute for the 3331/3332 sequence.  3 credits.
