RUSS 6613 - Advanced Russian Prerequisite: RUSS 6612 . This course is designed to further increase proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing through analysis and discussion of a variety of sources, including articles from the Russian press, videos of media broadcasts, and short works of fiction and nonfiction. Emphasis will be on consolidating knowledge of Russian grammar and expanding vocabulary to include topics in the social sciences and technology, as well as culture. The study of advanced grammar will incorporate translation of short articles from the press, thus developing an important practical skill. Work on increasing proficiency in writing and speaking will facilitate the production of longer and more connected discourse and allow students to express more complex ideas about culture and style of life in both Russia and the U.S. In addition, students will watch a cultural video series in Russian over the course of the semester and prepare short weekly journal assignments that engage new vocabulary and cultural content. A final oral project designed by the student will be due at the end of the semester. This course is taught entirely in Russian. 3 credits.
