ARBC 1101 - Elementary Arabic I

This is an introductory course, appropriate for students with no or little knowledge of the Arabic language. "Heritage Leaners", who are exposed to their dialects but have no knowledge of Modern Standard Arabic can also join this course.

Using task-based and communicative approaches to foreign language instruction, the students are introduced to the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing Arabic. Students learn the alphabet and use basic vocabulary related to self, relatives and surroundings, as well as basic grammar and related idiomatic expressions to carry out basic conversations. In addition to the language practice skills students explore a panoramic view of what constitutes the Arab world, and get a gist of the general folkloric customs, behavioral and cultural patterns shared across the Arab populations.  3 credits.
