HIST 2240 - Making Colonial Latin America: Race, Religion, Goods, and New Worlds

When Christopher Columbus landed in the Caribbean in 1492, an exchange of cultures, goods, food, and germs was initiated that created new worlds for better and for worse. In this course, students will examine the formation and unraveling of Colonial Latin America with a focus on how mestizaje (mixing) of European, African, Asian, and American cultures created Latin America and affected the world. As they explore these themes and gain a historical perspective, students will also develop or hone their skills in source and data analysis, visualization, and presentation that will serve them no matter their majors or their career goals. 3 credits.
