PHIL 2230 - Introduction to Islam


This course is a comprehensive exposure to essential outlines of Islamic history since the religion's origin in 7th century Arabia to the present day. It will introduce students to the basic tenets of Islamic thought as well as to the various elements of Islamic practices and their interpretations and development over time. Students will also examine the wide spectrum of Islamic perspectives - Sufism, Salafism- Islamism/political Islam etc.., and the various views on contemporary issues such as gender, Jihad and Islamic Law. The course will also provide a unique opportunity for students to produce in-depth critical analyses of others' viewpoints, values, and world views as well as their own, via oral discussions and written essays. Students will perform all written and oral activities in English. 3 credits.
