PHAS 6076 - Surgical Medicine Prerequisite: successful completion of 56 credit hours within the Physician Associate program. This course is a 5-week supervised clinical practice experience in surgery. Students will be placed with clinical practitioners who specialize in the delivery of all aspects of general surgical needs to patients in operative and surgical healthcare settings. Students are expected to assess and manage preoperative and post-operative patients, evaluate surgical risk, and assess for post-operative complications. They will have the opportunity to learn how to provide intraoperative support to the surgical team and assist/perform common procedures. Students are expected to refine and build on the techniques and clinical skills acquired during their didactic phase. Students will develop a more in-depth, specialty-focused, understanding of the best practices of the operating room, wound care, wound closure, diagnostic studies, and therapies specific to the conditions commonly encountered in the surgical setting. 4 credits.
