The Accounting Department oversees courses in accounting, business law, and taxation. While the study of accounting has its roots in economic theory, the courses emphasize practical application to real-world problems and the decision-making process, as well as principles and procedures used to produce the information required by decision-makers. Accounting promotes an appreciation for not only the nature of accounting information but also the use of that information in the complex process of decision-making by individuals, business firms, and government. The Department of Accounting at the University of New Haven seeks to serve the educational needs of those involved in all areas of accounting: public, private, or government.
The Accounting Department offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees. At the undergraduate level, we offer a B.S. in Accounting and a B.S. in International Business & Accounting. At the graduate level, we offer an M.S. in Accounting with concentrations available in Corporate, Forensic, Taxation, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) / Analytics. The AI / Analytics concentration is STEM designated - itself a measure of quantitative and analytical rigor. We also offer an M.S. in Taxation and contribute to the Masters in Business Administration (allowing students to focus in accounting through their elective set).
There are many career opportunities for accounting students in the business world, government, and academia. Accounting professionals are needed by consulting firms, public accounting firms, and private industry as well as by federal, state, and local governments. An educational opportunity is also available to students who desire to meet the 150-credit educational requirements necessary for licensure as a Certified Public Accounting (CPA). These additional educational requirements may be taken at the graduate level, leading to an M.S. Accounting, M.S. Taxation, or an MBA degree.
The department encourages internships, which enable students to combine their education with practical, paid work experience in their career field. For additional details, consult your academic advisor and the College of Business Internship and Co-Op Coordinator, Charles "Pete" Peterson, at 203-479-4551.
