Civil Engineering, M.S.

The master of science in civil engineering is designed for individuals with keen interest in civil/environmental/construction engineering/sustainability wanting to improve analysis and design on multidisciplinary civil engineering projects, usually in a team-oriented professional environment.  The program is uniquely multidisciplinary, combining knowledge of a variety of engineering disciplines to address the current needs of society.

A minimum of 30 credits must be completed to earn the master of science degree in civil engineering.  Specialized focus areas include: sustainability, environmental engineering, structural engineering, and construction management.

Admission Policy

Applicants to the master of science in civil engineering program must have earned or be close to earning a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction engineering, construction management, sustainability or a related field.

GPA requirement: Admission will usually require a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.  This is a guideline and is not a strict requirement.

Transcripts: Applicants will submit an official transcript displaying the seal of the institution and signed by the registrar.

Letters of recommendation: No more than three letters of recommendations are required. Students must submit the letters written by those best suited to comment on the student's academic and/or research skills.

Personal Statement: Students must submit a personal statement about their background including life experiences, why they want to pursue a master's degree in civil engineering, and what are their personal aspirations and career goals.

GRE requirement: The GRE is recommended but NOT required for the master's program.

TOEFL/IELTS: A minimum overall score of 84 internet-based format TOEFL score or a minimum overall score of 6.5 internet-based-format IELTS.  Applicants who have earned or will earn a Bachelor's degree will be exempt from submitting a TOEFL/IELTS score if the degree was earned from an institution where the language of instruction is English.  This standard was adopted from the Mechanical Engineering Master's Program at the University of New Haven. See the following information.  http://www.newhaven.edu/admissions/international/admission-requirements/english-language.php

Required Background

A prospective student with a baccalaureate degree in engineering, physics, or related degree must have satisfactorily completed an undergraduate level course in each of calculus I, II, and III, and differential equations. See requirements below.

Required background for a bachelor's degree holder in engineering

Physics               Physics I with Lab

Chemistry          General Chemistry I with Lab

Math                   Calculus 1/2/3 & Differential Equation

Note: The course requirements for students with non-engineering background shall be determined after interviewing with program coordinator.

Environmental Engineering, M.S.

The program is designed to prepare engineers for successful and dynamic careers in the continuously expanding field of environmental engineering.

In a rapidly changing and increasingly interconnected world, pollution problems have brought about increased individual and public awareness. Environmental engineering has expanded rapidly to include areas such as water and air pollution, groundwater contamination, solid and hazardous waste management, industrial waste treatment, pollution prevention, and sustainable development. Numerous employment opportunities are available for environmental engineers in federal, state, and local government as well as in the industrial and private sectors

The program provides the advanced educational skills necessary to meet the ever-changing needs and challenges of the field. It offers vigorous, professionally oriented courses, case studies, new technology, and research opportunities.

Admission Policy

Candidates for admission to the master's program are expected to have a grade point average of 3.0 or better (on a 4.0 scale) in their undergraduate major course work and to hold a baccalaureate degree in civil or environmental engineering from a program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) or equivalent accreditation.

Applications from candidates with an ABET-accredited or equivalent engineering degree in an area of study outside civil/environmental engineering and with a minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 will be considered. However, such students may be required to complete certain undergraduate civil/environmental engineering courses as a condition of acceptance. International applicants are urged to submit scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) to be considered for admission.  GRE scores are required for international applicants who wish to be considered for scholarships. The GRE is optional for graduates of regionally accredited United States colleges and universities. In general, engineering students who do not meet the above criteria or students with non-engineering undergraduate degrees are not considered for admission.

However, a potential candidate who does not meet the admission criteria may, with the approval of the department chairperson, pursue a program of study that includes a sequence of undergraduate courses to satisfy deficiencies. Only after the completion of such a program of study will the student be considered for admission to the graduate program in environmental engineering.
