Medical Laboratory Science, B.S.

Medical laboratory scientists are trained to work in clinical chemistry, hematology, immunohematology, immunology, and microbiology with various sub-specialties in each of those major areas. Our program of study consists of 125 credits of coursework designed to provide the knowledge and technical skills necessary to qualify an individual for work in a diagnostic clinical laboratory, in research, or in industry. 

Students complete two years of pre-professional courses in science and general education and two years of professional medical laboratory science coursework. The professional course work includes didactic courses, student laboratory instruction, and clinical experience rotations.

Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to sit for the ASCP BOC exam to become a board-certified medical laboratory technician.

Students must complete a capstone course. This course provides an opportunity for students to integrate their knowledge and experience into a culminating research project, clinical project, or practical experience. Students will demonstrate connections between concepts and skills encountered in previous health related coursework to their capstone project and experiences. Students are required to complete all clinical rotations in their final year of the program with a B or better. Students must complete a comprehensive exam with a grade of 80% or better.

The Medical Laboratory Science program has a goal to prepare competent, entry-level ASCP certified Medical Laboratory Scientists. NAACLS accreditation requires that the program achieve a 75% ASCP-BOC passage rate and a 70% graduation rate. 

PROGRAM OUTCOMES

By completing this program, students will:

  1. Demonstrate skills related to the field of medical laboratory science  
  2. Test their MLS knowledge through the ASCP certification examination
  3. Integrate research skills applicable to medical laboratory diagnostics and the improvement of patient care

University Core Curriculum


Majors that comply with the School of Health Sciences (SHS) core will complete the University Core Curriculum with the following restrictions:

Core Competency 5 - Critical Thinking and Problem Solving

Core Competency 7 - The Individual and Society

·      Competency 7.2:  HLTH 2200  - Introduction to US Healthcare

Core Competency 8 - Global and Intercultural Awareness

·      Competency 8.1:  DIET 1175  - Food Nutrition and Culture

 

Majors that comply with the School of Health Sciences (SHS) core are not restricted in the way that the Writing Across the Curriculum requirement is satisfied.
