Global Studies, B.A.

All students earning a bachelor's degree in global studies must complete the University Core Curriculum as part of the 121 credits required for the degree.

 

Program Outcomes

1. Students will have knowledge of the major cultural systems of the globe, including in-depth knowledge of at least one culture and geographic region outside their own; knowledge of the importance of cultural diversity in a global community.

2. Students will have knowledge of the interconnectedness of the world's political, economic, and environmental systems.

3. Students will have the skills to identify and evaluate international and cultural issues from multiple perspectives.

4. Students will have the skills to communicate and interact productively with peoples from other cultures, backgrounds, and countries; basic skills in at least one foreign language.

5. Students will have the experience(s) of cultures and/or trans-national issues beyond their local environment.

University Core Curriculum


The completion of 40 credits of the University Core Curriculum with the following restrictions:

  • Tier 1:
  • CC 1.1: ENGL 1112  or ENGL 1113 
  • CC 2.1: COMM 1130 
  • CC 3.1: Mathematical and Quantitative Literacy - choose any course
  • CC 4.1: Scientific Exploration - choose  
  • CC 6.1: Historical Perspectives - choose any course
  • CC 7.1: The Individual and Society - choose any course
  • CC 8.1: Global and Intercultural Awareness - choose any course
  • CC 9.1: Perspective on Creative Arts - choose any course
     
  • Tier 2 (12 credits):
  • To fulfill the additional 12 credits of Tier 2 courses, Global Studies majors can choose Tier 2 courses from any competency.

Note:  Global Studies majors cannot take more than 6 credits of GLBS prefix courses as part of the core curriculum.

Additional Requirements


Plus two semesters (six credits) of a modern language other than the student’s native language (Students concentrating in Area Studies should take a language relevant to their specific region.)

Plus two Global Studies electives


(Global Studies electives, including special topics and independent studies, must be approved by the Global Studies adviser.)

Plus ten 3000-level or 4000-level electives


Students must select one of the focus areas described below and complete a minimum of five courses from the designated list. Special topics courses and independent studies may be applied to a concentration as appropriate, but only with prior approval by both the student's adviser and the Global Studies Advisory Committee. Students may alternately elect to construct a customized concentration, but it must be developed in careful consultation with the Global Studies adviser and approved by the Global Studies Advisory Committee.

Study Abroad


All Global Studies majors are strongly encouraged to complete at least one study abroad experience.
