Interdisciplinary Studies, B.A.

The B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies requires the completion of 121 credits: 39 credits to complete the major; 40 credits of the University Core Curriculum, and 42 elective credits.

Students completing a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies will, in collaboration with their academic advisor, construct coherent programs of study in at least two major areas of study by choosing one of the following options:

  • Combining two existing 18-credit programs from the approved list of minors

-OR-

  • Combining an existing 18-credit minor with an 18-credit self-designed concentration (approval by the Interdisciplinary Studies Director required). 

INTS 4400 Capstone in Interdisciplinary Studies is required for the remaining 3 credits in the major.

Additionally, students must complete 40 credits of the University Core Curriculum with the following restrictions:

Tier 1 Core courses are restricted as follows: 

Additional restrictions or prescriptions may apply depending on the student's chosen program combination. Students will consult with their academic advisor, making choices that adhere to academic policies that govern the duplication of credits.

Tier 2 Core courses are restricted as follows: 

  • CC. 7.2 (3 credits) INTS 1100 Introduction to Interdisciplinary Studies
  • The remaining requisite 9 credits of Tier 2 Core courses must be courses from disciplines other than the 2 programs the student is combining for the major.

Program Outcomes

  • Students will analyze their own individuality, personal strengths, and interests, and articulate plans to connect those qualities with short-term career plans and lifelong habits of mind. 

  • Students will analyze complex problems with multiple disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches, effectively describing problems, analyses, and solutions in written and oral form.  

  • Students will synthesize interdisciplinary approaches to learning and scholarship from two or more disciplinesthrough self-designed thematic and/or problem-focused study.

Discipline Choices Plus Capstone (39 credits)


Students choosing to major in Interdisciplinary Studies will, in collaboration with their academic advisor(s), construct coherent programs of study in at least two major topics (for example, biology and art).  The courses may be a combination of two existing 18-credit programs from the approved list of minors.  An existing 18-credit minor may also be combined with one 18-credit self-designed concentration (approval by the Interdisciplinary Studies Director required).

  • Plus fourteen electives (42 credits) chosen in consultation with advisor.
