STEM Designation: This program is STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math)-designated by the Department of Homeland Security. For more information, please see https://www.newhaven.edu/admissions/stem-designated-programs.php

The B.S. Mathematics program prepares students to work competitively with mathematics in a variety of quantitative career settings such as business, economics, social, and natural sciences. Additionally,  the B.S. curriculum is tailored for students interested in pursuing graduate study in mathematics or other fields such as finance, computational science, or engineering.

Program outcomes:

1. Students will be able to solve problems involving non-trivial mathematical computations.

2. Students will be able to write formal proofs of mathematical statements.

3. Students will demonstrate connections among different areas of mathematics or with other disciplines.

4. Students will demonstrate a command of advanced mathematical topics.

Students earning a B.S. degree with a major in mathematics must complete a minimum of 120 credits. Courses include the University Core Curriculum, and the courses requirements indicated below.  Note: some courses listed below fulfill University Core Curriculum requirements.

University Core Curriculum (43 credits)

All students majoring in BS mathematics must complete the University Core Curriculum with the following restrictions:

Tier 2:

Electives (36 credits)

  • Plus twelve electives

Direct Entry B.S. Mathematics/M.S. Data Science

Application Process:

The direct entry B.S. in Mathematics and M.S. in Data Science degree program is available to qualified students completing their sophomore year of the B.S. in Mathematics program. Students must apply for admission before the fall semester of their junior year of the B.S. program. To qualify, the student must have a cumulative major GPA of at least 3.0 at the time of application to the accelerated program. The student must also submit one letter of recommendation from a University of New Haven Mathematics faculty member.

Requirements:

Students need 150 credits to complete the direct entry program between the B.S. in Mathematics and M.S. in Data Science. These 150 credits include 120 credits for the B.S. in Mathematics and 30 for the M.S. in Data Science. Once enrolled in the direct entry program, students take three graduate Data Science courses during the senior year of the B.S. program. During the fifth year, students complete the M.S. degree by taking the remainder of the required graduate courses.

Students who decide to pursue the direct entry program should select Numerical Analysis, Optimization, Linear Algebra II, Probability and Statistics II, or any other course approved by the department as Math Electives on their worksheet for the B.S. in Mathematics.
