Engineering, B.S.

The Bachelor of Science in Engineering is a multi-disciplinary engineering degree program giving students the skills desired for an increasingly multi-disciplinary engineering environment. This program combines the study of fundamental engineering principles with significant work in a complementary area. By design, the B.S. Engineering program has much more flexibility than is possible with a degree in a specific engineering discipline. This flexibility results in many elective choices which will allow the student to develop depth in a complementary area of his or her choice.

Within the B.S. Engineering degree, students are encouraged to select a minor that may be satisfied using the program elective courses. The minor should be selected with the goal of preparing the student for a particular career path. In this program, minors are selected in one of these general categories:

  • Business / Finance
  • Communication / Technical communication
  • Biomedical engineering / Biology
  • Data science / Computer Science

Dual Degree Program - BS Engineering combined with a Master's degree

The program also provides the opportunity for combining the B.S. Engineering degree with one of a select set of Master's degrees. Students enrolling in this program can earn both the Engineering B.S. degree and a Master's degree in a 5 year planned program. In addition to being more cost effective, the dual degree option provides students with a multi-disciplinary engineering background and an advanced degree in a specialized area. The Degree Program

The B.S. Engineering degree program requires completion of 125 credits, including the 40-credit University Core Curriculum requirements. Most of the requirements for the University Core are satisfied by specifically designated courses aligned with the program's objectives. The B.S. Engineering program also includes a core of interdisciplinary engineering courses bearing the EASC prefix. These courses provide a broad engineering background that spans the major disciplines. In addition, students develop engineering depth by choosing additional engineering courses from a variety of electives.

Students can use electives (including engineering electives) to focus on an area of interest within the engineering disciplines or to combine engineering with courses in other disciplines.

During the senior year, students must complete a capstone project. The project should include elements of engineering design, laboratory research, computer simulations or other significant independent work. The project may be completed in one semester or may span the full year, as appropriate to the topic and scope. One choice is to participate in a two-semester, industry-sponsored design project with students from other majors.

Program Outcomes:

A graduate of the program is expected to have the ability to: 

1. Identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.

2. Apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.

3. Communicate effectively with a range of audiences.

4. Recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts

5. Function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.

6. Develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.

7. Acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.

Notes on Requirements


1Electives. Free electives allow students the flexibility to pursue other courses offered at the University and provide numerous options to create a degree plan according to their interests. These electives may include courses needed to complete a minor in any area offered by the University.

2Restricted Electives. To maintain depth, restricted electives, which can be taken from any discipline, are generally limited to 3000+ level courses that require at least one prerequisite. Restricted electives may include courses needed to satisfy the requirements of a minor.                                                                   

3Capstone Project. The capstone project consists of student research or a student project that is completed in the capstone project course EASC 4501 (and optional EASC 4502). The student may choose a one-semester project experience, which must be completed in EASC 4501 (3 credits), or a two-semester experience, which includes both EASC 4501 and EASC 4502 (six credits) with the EASC 4502 course filling an elective. The student may also fulfill the capstone project requirement by completing a capstone design two-semester course sequence from any other Tagliatela College of Engineering degree program.

4Engineering Lab Elective. The required engineering lab course provides students with a lab experience in any engineering major. This provides the student with added flexibility in constructing a program that best fits their interests.

5Tagliatela College of Engineering Electives. Fulfilled from by successful completion of any course offered at the Tagliatela College of Engineering.

6Upper Level Tagliatela College of Engineering Elective. Fulfilled from by successful completion of any upper level course offered at the Tagliatela College of Engineering.

 

Note that remedial classes cannot be used to satisfy any of the program's requirements. If such courses are needed, the total number of credits to complete the program is increased by these credits. The following courses are considered remedial and will not count toward degree requirements: math courses below the level of MATH 1117, English courses below the level of ENGL 1112, and Chemistry courses below the level of CHEM 1115.

Dual Degree BS Engineering / MBA Program


The dual degree BS Engineering/ MBA degree program is available to qualified BS Engineering students both currently in the program and new incoming students being admitted to the program.  Included in this program is the option to choose one of the following minors: Business Management, Business Analytics, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, or any other minor that you may wish to choose. The minor is included in this program and five graduate-level business courses are taken during the senior year that count toward the MBA degree. Students graduate with a BS in Engineering following their fourth year and complete the MBA degree by taking the remainder of the graduate-level courses in their fifth year. To qualify, current students must apply for graduate admission no later than two semesters prior to the anticipated fulfillment of the BS Engineering degree requirements, have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 at the time of application to the dual degree program, and submit one letter of recommendation from an engineering faculty member.

Dual Degree BS Engineering / MS Biomedical Engineering Program


The dual degree BS Engineering/ MS Biomedical Engineering program is available to qualified BS Engineering students both currently in the program and new incoming students being admitted to the program. Included in this program is the option to receive a Biology minor. Students take four graduate-level Biomedical Engineering courses during the senior year that count toward the MS in Biomedical Engineering degree. Students graduate with a BS in Engineering following their fourth year and complete the MS Biomedical Engineering degree by taking the remainder of the graduate-level courses in their fifth year. To qualify, current students must apply for graduate admission no later than two semesters prior to the anticipated fulfillment of the BS Engineering degree requirements, have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 at the time of application to the dual degree program, and submit one letter of recommendation from an engineering faculty member.
