B.S., Biology

STEM Designation: This program is STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math)-designated by the Department of Homeland Security. For more information, please see https://www.newhaven.edu/admissions/stem-designated-programs.php

Students earning a B.S. degree with a major in biology must complete a minimum of 125 credits. Courses include the course requirements for the particular biology concentration as indicated below and completion of 40 credits of the University Core Curriculum with restrictions as listed below.

University Core Curriculum

Concentration in Cellular and Molecular Biology

This concentration gives the student the opportunity to focus on cellular and sub-cellular topics.  It provides students with the basic knowledge and laboratory skills for entry level positions in biomedical and pharmaceutical laboratories, and companies using the techniques of cellular and molecular biology.  This concentration also prepares students for graduate programs in the areas of biology and the biomedical sciences.  Students who complete the program are highly qualified to enter the workforce in biological research, health, or related life science fields. In addition to the University Core Curriculum and 30 credits of free electives, the following courses are required:

Accelerated B.S. Biology - Cellular and Molecular Biology/M.S. Cellular and Molecular Biology

The accelerated B.S. Biology -  Cell and Molecular Concentration and M.S. Cellular and Molecular Biology dual degree program allows students to complete an undergraduate and graduate degree in 4 years. The program is available to qualified students with a minimum 3.5 high school GPA, 1100 or higher on the SAT, and a minimum of 12 AP credits counted towards freshman biology and calculus. Students must maintain a GPA of at least 3.0 at the end of each academic year for continued participation in the program.  The minimum number of credits required for the undergraduate degree is 120, and the minimum number of credits required for the graduate degree is 30. A maximum of 9 graduate credits may be used to fulfill both undergraduate and graduate requirements.

Direct Entry B.S. Biology - Cellular and Molecular Biology/M.S. Cellular and Molecular Biology

The direct entry, linked B.S. Biology - Cellular and Molecular Concentration and M.S. Cellular and Molecular Biology degree program is available to qualified students completing their sophomore or junior year. If the undergraduate student completes prescribed major requirement courses with a minimum grade of a B- and a cumulative major GPA of 3.0 or higher, they would be allowed to enter the graduate program. The courses considered are BIOL 2232 BIOL 2253 BIOL 2254 BIOL 3301 BIOL 3306 , and BIOL 3393  . During the senior year, the student takes four courses toward the graduate degree. During the fifth year, students complete the M.S. degree by taking ten more graduate courses and the comprehensive exam.

To qualify, students must apply for admission no later than two semesters prior to the anticipated fulfillment of the B.S. degree requirements, and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 at the time of application to the accelerated program.  The student must submit one letter of recommendation by a Biology and Environmental Science faculty member.
