Exercise Science, B.S.


The Bachelor of Science in exercise science combines basic scientific knowledge in human anatomy and physiology, physics, nutrition, psychology and human behavior. This includes practical skills in exercise, fitness, wellness and clinical areas designed to prepare students to be competitive in the 21st century healthcare workforce. The program addresses the scientific, social, and administrative aspects of working with clients, patients, and other health professionals in recreational, athletics, and clinical settings.  In particular, this program aims to provide a broad training for students interested in careers in fitness and recreation, athletic training, clinical rehab programs, nutrition. 

Students are required to complete a capstone course. This course provides an opportunity for students to integrate their knowledge and experience into a culminating research project, clinical project, or practical experience. Students will demonstrate the connections between concepts and skills encountered in previous health-related coursework to their capstone project and experience. 

The program also requires that all students complete 3-credit internship in a health-related setting and/or fitness/sport organization or industry setting. This internship provides a structured opportunity for students to complete clinical and volunteer hours related to health sciences and health professions. Students are required to complete a minimum of 250 and a maximum of 350 healthcare-related volunteer or work hours.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES:
  1. Identify the social and behavioral aspects of exercise for individuals and populations including generally healthy, diseased and sport populations. 
  2. Demonstrate cultural competence and be competent in discussion in healthcare settings, recreational environments and advanced fitness/exercise arenas.
  3. Demonstrate professionalism incorporating the ethical values of the discipline. 
  4. Combine scientific knowledge, skills and techniques into health-related problems.  
  5. Use effective communication techniques to develop professional educational skills and materials with clients in the fitness/exercise and sport environment. 

 

Students earning a bachelor of science degree in exercise science must complete a minimum of 126 credits. Courses must include the University Core Curriculum for bachelor's degree students and the required courses listed below.

Majors that comply with the School of Health Sciences (SHS) core will complete the University Core Curriculum with the following restrictions:

Majors that comply with the School of Health Sciences (SHS) core are not restricted in the way that the Writing Across the Curriculum requirement is satisfied.
