Music, B.A.

The bachelor of arts in music is a dynamic program for the study of music within a liberal arts curriculum. The B.A. program is distinctive in its treatment of music as a world-wide phenomenon. The program is also flexible, allowing students to focus on performance or musicology.

Students focusing on performance are urged to take private instruction on an instrument or in voice each semester of enrollment. Seniors must present either a senior thesis or a senior recital to qualify for graduation. There are options in the senior year curriculum for courses appropriate for thesis or recital preparation.

Program Outcomes

1. Students experience and understand music as a performance art.

2. Students can understand, analyze and utilize the grammar and language of musical art and communication.

3. Students can apply knowledge in understanding music as culture and in its cultural and social context.

All students majoring in the B.A. in music must complete 122-123 credits.

University Core Curriculum


The completion of 40 credits of University Core Curriculum with the following restrictions:

  • CC 3.1 MATH 1104  or MATH 1108  
  • CC 8.1 MUSC 1112  
  • CC 9.1 All except music courses
  • CC 9.2 MUSC 2211  
  • A course from CC 1.2
  • A course from CC 8.2
  • A course from any tier 2 with the exception of MUSC prefix courses
